System Administrator @ Hit the Sticks

Posted on January 10th, 2012 at 5:47pm

Location: Devon, PA.

We are currently building a turn based strategy game that is designed solely for online competitive play and we need your help building out the backend so we can put the game into a production environment. There is a clean slate here, the system needs architecting and implementation from the ground up; you are not coming in to maintain someone else’s existing archaic/monolithic system. This is a full-time position, after initially building out the system, you will extend and maintain it.

We are looking for someone that is energetic and creative, someone comfortable working in close collaboration with colleagues of different disciplines, and also capable of generating great work without oversight.

We are a small team, and when it comes to game and art design we typically are able to all collaborate together. Ideally, you have an interest in building and designing games, so that between extending and maintaining the backend, you can participate in frontend design discussions (i.e. “that muzzle flash looks lame”), it is better that we all collaborate together, instead of you slinking into the darkness and becoming a BOFH.

The successful applicant will:

Design, implement, and administer the network and systems responsible for running infrastructure services and game servers for an online multiplayer strategy game; this will include the development of:

* Internet-facing and backend networks.
* Installation, configuration, tuning, and administration of linux servers and infrastructure software (ntp, ldap, dhcp, networked filesystems, etcetera).
* Installation and administration of the redis key-value store, including persistence, replication, and backups.

Required Qualifications:

* Bachelors Degree in Information Science & Technology or a related field.
* 2+ years of industry experience with linux, medium-scale network design, LDAP, storage area networks, and network security.

Bonus Qualifications:

* Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, mathematics, or a related discipline.
* Fluency in Java, including advanced JVM options and tuning.
* Familiarity with: ruby (jruby), redis, jetty, opendj, xmpp, sinatra, aspectj, openfire, spark, or smack.
